Honeyed words

Sir: A few weeks ago in the Diary (13 April), A. N. Wilson revealed that the new Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, is the brother of John Carey, the Merton Professor of English at Oxford University, critic and reviewer.

My Oxford friends tell me that in fact they are not related in any way. Presum- ably A. N. Wilson was making some sort of joke. I must, however, confess that in Colwyn Bay we have always felt that jokes ought to be funny.

Incidentally, I have tasted John Carey's home-produced honey and it is far more pleasurable to taste than A. N. Wilson's 'porkies'.
