The Americans appear to be succeeding in their plan of

sending over fresh meat to this country. They have organised a system under which some 3,000 quarters of fresh beef can be sent over in each steamer, not frozen, but cooled to a safe temperature by air which has passed through ice-chambers. The meat is very good and "bright," and in spite of opposition from the butchers, a cargo was sold in Liverpool last week at from 6d. to 8d. a pound. The meat, it is said, has fetched-8d. per lb. in Glasgow for some time, and does not excite the prejudice arising from the over- cooked condition of the Australian tinned meat.
