Steel meets the needs of public building
Public buildings designed with a framework of steel can fulfil their required purpose, while fully reflecting local character and-pride. This is because a steel structure does not dictate to the designer, but gives him flexibility of layout and a completely free choice of materials to harmonise with the surroundings. Yet steel has also proved to be good for the public purse, where a number of local authorities have co-operated in developing and making economical bulk purchases of steel structural systems designed to provide public buildings quickly. Steel can express dignity or simplicity. It can rise elegantly, span widely, or throw a dome across an arena with spectacular effect. It will serve on bad ground as well as good, as a fixed or a movable structure, and can be clad as the designer chooses.
To bring back a sense of pride in public buildings and build more quickly, more economically, design in steel.
