Hijacking

Sir: I deplore PC's reference (November 4) to " the shameless gutlessness of the West German government in the face of the latest hijacking spree." On the contrary, the West Germans Should be praised. The notion that any civilised government should cold bloodedly decide to allow planeloads of innocent passengers and crews to be slaughtered in order, it is hoped, to defeat the hijackers and the terrorist, is to my mind monstrous. By what conceivable right can governments decide that such people should be murdered?

I realise and accept that this may mean that there will be more hijackings and hostages taken than heretofore. Or it may not. Whether' it doe; or not, some other way must be found of defeating the international gangsterdom which is now at large. The deliberate sacrifice of the lives of innocent people simply must not be countenanced. It is ironic but encouraging that it is the Germans who, together with the Swedes, are showing the way a civilised country should behave.
