Waugh bash

From Lt-Col A. N. Skinner Sir: I think the limit has been reached by your book reviewer — Auberon Waugh. On October 28 he reviewed a book by S. Raven, and quoted, quite unnecessarily, an extract, vulgar and filthy, which qualified for exhibition with similar graffiti in a public loo. On November 4 he reveiwed a book by P. Hansford Johnson, and again quoted a passage which described coitus in unnecessary detail.

That these celebrated (?) authors see fit to produce this sort of muck is one thing, but that it should be thrust under our noses is quite another. It looks as though A. W. scours the country to find the dirtiest books to review, and ignores the scores of others, worthwhile and clean, which the majority of us would like to read. I cannot believe that the average Spectator reader wants to read the first sort — those who do can find plenty of food to sustain their diseased minds in the specifically porno magazines which are apparently widely available.

In a fairly recent number of The Spectator we were regaled with the description •of someone's excretal efforts.

Surely The Spectator should aim higher than this.

Am I alone in these sentiments?
