Martell’s country weblogger explains...

Winter walks

Hello! Welcome to my diary of the delicious and divine. The everyday and exciting. Take the weekend... Geoff has invited Lucy and John up to the cottage for the weekend. Now, Lucy is not exactly a country girl and her idea of a long walk is the 100-yard hike from her flat to the pub.

Last time, John brought us Martell’s VSOP Cognac. He knows it’s our favourite, great for filling our hip flasks and a lovely fireside treat at home after a hearty day out. Lucy phoned up last week to ask what everyone would be wearing. I said, well, wellies and a wax jacket or anorak mostly – it’s raining cats and dogs. “Do they come in hot pink?” she asked. “Green’s best,” I said patiently. We live in the Lake District near Derwent Water — there are so many fantastic walks around here. I went online for a short one Lucy could manage. The Ramblers’ Association has a postcode search facility for walks and there’s a good redirect facility on the Walking Routes site. The Cumbria Way is on our doorstep, but Geoff went to www.countrysideaccess.gov. uk anyway to make sure we kept the country code. There’s a nice pub in the Good Pub Guide Geoff and John fancied trying for lunch and the Met Office told us the forecast was good, so we gave the dogs a nice run. Lucy’s now smitten with this walking lark, and wanted a jacket of her own plus proper boots. Well, I said, Black’s and Lands’ End are both online, so you can do mail order. The cat got the cream – Lands’ End had a great jacket in hot pink with a tangerine lining.

Signing off now – but do read me again. I’ve some great indoor games tips.
