A conflict is going on in Belgium, between the Bishops

and the Universities. After the separation of Belgium from Holland, a system of education freed from clerical interference was esta- blished in Brussels. This has been eminently successful ; it has been copied in other places ; and, seeing the sacerdotal influence decline, the ecclesiastics recently appealed to the Belgian Go- vernment against something which the Professors had done tan- tamount to a teaching of Protestantism. The Government issued a cautionary notice to the Professors, without much effect ; and now the Bishops denounce the doctrines of the Professors, and appeal from a passive Government and an aggressive Protestant- ism to the parents of Belgian youth. The appeal is a confession of weakness, which is not likely to increase the influence of the Churchmen.
