Unlettered girls

Sir: Francis King asserts that even in the 1940s schoolgirls would have known about `French letters and Dutch caps' (Books, 11 October). I don't know which schoolgirls he was mixing with, but I certainly hadn't heard about such things in the early Sixties — and as my flatmates didn't tell me about them, presumably they hadn't heard either.
