NEWS OF THE WEEK.

THE statements made by Lord Kitchener and Mr. Asquith in Parliament on Wednesday were just what was needed. They provided enough information to let the country know where it stands and to prove the need for still greater efforts. The truth plus cheerful encouragement is always a good mixture, and that was what the speeches contained. It has cured numerous ills in this country before and will cure more in the future. We have written fully of Lord Kitchener'a speech elsewhere, and need only say here that his words seem to us to point either to National Service dr to some expedient that will sooner or later lead to com- pulsion.
