Who is for Affluence?

It has long been one of the legends of politics that Mr. Macmillan fought the 1959 general election on the slogan : 'You've never had it so good.' In fact, he used a different and less dog- matic phrase in the summer of 1957 to point out the dangers of inflation, not to boast of the benefits of prosperity. Still, we are now all on the same side. Mr. Wilson thunders that the Tories claim we have never had it so good and adds, 'the truth is we could have had it much better.' So both sides are in favour of Santa Claus. So, as readers of this column will recall, am I. And that leaves only Sir William Haley against affluence. But as it is clear that his present intention is to bring out The Times in support of the Labour Party in the closing days of the campaign, even he may toe the new line.
