is not favourably impressed by the beginning of this novel. Why "auricular faculties" instead of ears ? Why is a Roman eagle said to have "waved" over an encampment ? The author can scarcely know what an eagle was. The reader will hardly be pleased as he makes acquaintance with the characters in the story, though he may see that the writer's style does not always do justice to a certain power of thought.
