Holed in one

From Mr Jeremy Deedes Sir: If memory serves, it was Taki's friend Arnaud de Borchgrave (High life, 12 April) who brought, at a price, a little style to the Intercontinental Hotel in Amman during the 1970 fracas.

De Borchgrave arrived with a rack of Savile Row suitings (Huntsman, I think) that would have shamed William Boot, and they were duly installed in his suite. Shortly after three hijacked planes were blown up at Dawson's Field, hostilities started around the hotel, where those of us hacks covering the events were holed up. Alas, the first concrete-piercing round to be loosed off by the PLO went through our hotel via A de B's hanging cupboard. The result, I was told, was a neat and perfectly formed hole through the jacket and trousers of every suit.
