Mentone. By W. Chambers. (Chambers.)—Mr. Chambers sums up what is

to be said for and against Menton with a judicial impartiality. He has an acquaintance of some standing with the place as well as with some of its rivals, and puts it in tho first rank of European wintering- places a distinction which it would be more manifestly entitled to if the Montonians were moro zealous in doing what they could to improve their town. Tho book contains advice that visitors will find very useful, and some hints which they will do well to observe about the mode of life to bo observed. Fine as is the climate, it is one in which indiscretions are speedily punished. In an interesting chapter we have the history of the town. The details of the absurd oppressions whioh' exhausted the patience of the people and brought the rule of the Prince to an end is a very curious study of human eccentricity.
