The Hungarians at Berlin Elaborate - preparations are being made in

Berlin' for the reception of the Regent, the Premier and . the Foreign Minister of Hungary on Saturday. The visitors, will no doubt` feel both honoured and „embarrassed, for they can hardly affect to regard the courtesies paid them as dis- interested. Germany clearly has her purposes regarding Hungary, and though it is not yet clear what they are no one supposes that they are concerned primarily with Hun- gary's welfare. They are concerned primarily withGermany1s welfare and the furtherance of her plans for the extension of her influence to the south-east.. There is a strong Nazi movement in Hungary, fairly vigorously repressed. The Hungarian Ministers will no doubt be called on to give assurances that the repression shall cease. Then, with the usual stimulus and assistance from without, National Socialism in Hungary will make progress, and German and Hungarian foreign and economic policy can be rapidly assimilated. • That done, German influence will have almost encircled Czechoglovakia and been carried to the frontier of Rumania, which is beginning to display lively anxiety at the scale and character of the German military manoeuvres. Such anticipations may be falsified, but it will be surprising if they are, in view of the methodical pertinacity of German policy. If Admiral Horthy and Dr. Imredy and M. de Kanya get back to Budapest uncommitted their general reputation in Europe will rise considerably.
