Ends of the Earth

SIR,—The July 15 SPECTATOR has just reached us in Libya and we were interested to see a review

of Children of Allah, an account of Agnes Newton Keith's experiences in this country. Ronald Hingley reports that Libyan women may 'never set foot out- side their houses, not even to take a child to hospital when it is bleeding to death.' This melodramatic statement must surely be his generalisation from one particular case. if that is not so, I just wonder who are those veiled women I pass daily in the street and those 1 see waiting patiently with their children as I wait with mine each time I have to visit the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital. The situation for women in Libya is bad enough, but it is fortunately not quite as bad as Mr Hingley suggests. ANN THWAITE
