article in the last issue of the Spectator regarding slavery in Portuguese West Africa, we

desire to draw your attention to an extract from the article reading as follows :—

"That slave-grown cocoa is in no sense essential to the [cocoa] industry is already proved by the fact that a German firm, Messrs. Van Houten, make no use of cocoa grown in the islands of San Thome and Principe."

We beg to state on behalf of Messrs. C. J. Van Houten and Zoon, the manufacturers of "Van Honten's Cocoa," that they

are in no sense a German firm, but an old-established Dutch firm with a long-standing connexion in this country.—We
