Here was an opportunity. During the war the American officers

had become fast friends with Sir Lewis Bayly, who is known. to them as " Uncle Lewis." According to all accounts Admiral Bayly is not a man who is easily pleased, but when he is pleased he knows how to show his gratification and approval. In practice this meant that during the war the proficient and absolutely unjealous services of the American sailors brought them the unwavering confidence of Sir Lewis Bayly. The American Navy, therefore, determined to have a " jolly " in honour of " Uncle Lewis " when he came to America.
