Fortunately, they were met and p beaten, William King looking on, out of range. But what at, bear in mind is, that the Waikatos did come down and jo' war ; and the fear is that; hitvingheen beaten, the whole be roused against the Europeans. Already part of the Taranaki garrison had been withdrawn to defend Auckland. The ecclesi- astical party must now begin to suspect the wisdom of the course they pursued in encouraging the outrageous pretensions of William King.
