Mr. F. W. Maze, the new Inspector-General of Chinese Customs,

played his part in a strange ceremony when he took up his appointment on Thursday, January 10th. The Shanghai correspondent of the Times says that Mr. Maze, having made three bows to the portrait of Sun Yat-sen and the National flag, took the following oath in Chinese := " I solemnly- swear to obey the will of the President and accept the principles Of the-Kuomintang, to abide by the national 1).ws, perform my duties in a faithful, and earnest manner, be honost and conscientious in the performance of my duties, and not to fa t with selfish motives. Should 1 break this oath 1 shall submit myself to punishment of the severest. kind which the Kuomintang may impose."
