FLIGHT OVER EVEREST

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] Sin,---In my review of First Over Everest I debated the question of whether the flight over Mount Everest should truly be regarded as it mighty epic or an unusual excursion. In the course of it I made the admittedly disparaging remark that " the flight could at any time have been made by Royal Air Force personnel in India, given a Pegasus engine with supercharger and a set of oxygen equipment." Colonel Blacker has expressed his " eordial and hearty concurrence" with this statement, so one might think that there was no more to be said.

However, Colonel Blacker proceeded to attack with mighty sarcasm the implication that the engine in question can be used by Royal Air Force personnel in service aircraft. None the less the machines of No. 501 (City of Bristol). Bomber Squadron are now fitted with the Pegasus engine.-- -I am,
