-Nicholson circles the square

Sir: It is possible, as Mr Bryan Robertson says (28 June), that Francis Bacon was in- fluenced by James Pryde, but if Mr Robertson has ever seen pictures by Pryde of nocturnal cats on roofs I should be inter- ested to know where they are.

Bryan Robertson writes: What loomed in my mind were those paintings by Bacon of a deserted space in which a dog swirls around in what scents like an epileptic fit. For some reason for which I ask Mr Hudson's indulgence, they do remind me of Pryde.
