Sir: As a democrat (as well as a socialist) I

would endorse Mr J. G. Hill's letter (July 12) concerning European union. Perhaps you would allow me to further his comments by pointing out that an opinion poll recently published, in the Times has shown that i(a))1a.

majority albeit a slender one of British people are opposed to the direct' elections to the European Assembljr now planned for 1978; (b) a larger majority of the British are opposed to Progress towards the political union of Europe. However, a majority of people in the Nine as a whole are for direct elections and political union.

This strongly supports the anti-Marketeers' claim that the massive majority for the EEC in last month's Referendum was not a vote for a European superstate. Therefore, before any further moves are taken towards Political union, it seems only right that a further referendum should be held in Britain to get "full-hearted consent" for What would in effect, be the destruction Of the British Parliament, and the consequent relegation of this country to being a small province of a large superstate. It seems highly improbable that the people would vote for this

and therefore the pro-Marketeers, if they really are democrats, should 0„Ppose tooth and nail any moves to further integrate Britain into the EEC, as the anti-Marketeers will do. And if the only alternative to political union is the withdrawal of Britain from the EEC then withdraw we must. If the British People have to face such a choice then it seems quite plain that they will reverse last month's decision.
