MUSIC.

"Oh speak thou not of love to me ;" a Ballad. Composed by H. P. HILL.

In the construction of the accompaniment to this ballad, appears the hand of one who has studied to good effect the science of harmony ; but to form a ballad which can have any chance of popularity, something else is required—melody. Without this essential ingredient, the labour and learning of the musician are vain ; and we would endeavour to impress on the minds of all young composers, that even a profound knowledge of the principles and practice of harmony is but one step in the road to fame. They may be obtained, with due diligence, by anyone; but when ob- tained, they are but the means to an end.
