The Soul of Abraham Lincoln. By William E. Barton, (New

York ; G. H. Doran ; and London : Hodder and Stoughton. 16s. net.)—Many Americans have written books about Lincoln's religious views, mainly because his former law-partner, Herndon, said, after the President's death, that he " was an infidel, some- times bothering on atheism." Mr. Barton, in reviewing the question at length, has, of course, no difficulty in showing that Lincoln was not an infidel, but a profoundly religious man, though he did not belong to any denomination or sect.
