LAND OF THE WHITE PARASOL By Sydney J. -Legendre

Land of the White Parasol (Rich and Cowan, I25. 6d.) is the account of an expedition under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History into the interior of Indo-China. The author was accompanied, by his wife and Mr. Daniel Carter, a naturalist, and a few native carriers. Indo-China still offers opportunities for discovery to the traveller who can overcome the obstacles of uninhabited, pathless jungle and mountain, and of unmapped rivers and also opportunities of writing something really unusual. Mr. Legendre has not perhaps made the most of his chances, but he has written a book that is enter- taining and informative enough to raise it above the average level of mere com- petence and readability. His descrip- tions of the courts of minor native princes where they were sothetimes. entertained are written with vigour and a nice touch of humour. The tiger- shooting episodes are of less general interest, though big-game hrinters will enjoy them. Though by no means an important book, Land of the White Parasol merits a place on the library list.
