There is nothing in the whole world so expensive as

a Radical improvement made in the interests of economy. It appears from a Parliamentary paper just issued, that during the past year the Attorney-General drew a sum of over -£20,000. This was apparently nearly £7,000 more than was paid in 1892-93 under the old scheme. Yet the new arrange- ment was introduced to do away with "a public scandal." It must, however, be mentioned that the Behring Sea Arbitra- tion occurred during last year, and that the fees paid to the law officers for appearing in Paris figure in the accounts. The whole subject is one which the Chancellor of the Exchequer should closely investigate. The sums now paid are prepos- terous, and out of proportion to the normal earnings of the profession.
