General Foch is the hero of the Marne. It was

ho who, with the true commander's eye, not only saw that a gap had appeared between the two German armies opposite him, but instantly realized what could be done, and therefore must be done, to use this amazing piece of good fortune. With magnificent daring, he ordered a French Division to march across the enemy's front to assist him. Then like a thunderbolt he fell upon the Germans, and so gave General Joffe() the power to win a victory, and then to force the enemy's retreat from the Marne.
