S1R,—Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu in his article on the

Cup Final has been brave enough to put into words something that has troubled northern football followers in relation to southern clubs for some time—the seemingly increasing reliance on deliberate fouling as a means of control- ling a game. Many instances could be quoted ; the treatment of Matthews in some games has been shocking. It would be interesting to hear, Sir, whether this tendency has been noticed by others or whether it is merely northern tenderness for northern players that gives rise to the feeling.—
