Will

Waspe

That painting peer, Viscount Weymouth, is making a determined bid to get London's serious art critics .(begging the question of whether such exist) down to Longleat next week when he unveils the vast range of murals with which he has adorned the walls of the private apartments. Hurt because his artistic activities have so far attracted press attention only in gossip columns (oh, dear, here we go again), he has penned a number of quite touching personal pleas to the critics.

Meanwhile his press agents have been sending out some quite provocative supporting material, quoting Weymouth (who has written his own cataloeue material under the name of Alexander Thynne) in deny.Ink a possible charge of obscenity, while observing that children will not be admitted to, and those of a maidenly nature warned against entering, the ' Kama Sutra room' (a guest bedroom, not his own), Waspe, who confesses to having had a peep and felt his wings curl, wishes his lordship luck in getting away with it — with both cops and critics.

Remote-control show

Waspe has always had the warmest regard for the work and enterprise of the Serpentine Gallery, but begs leave to doubt whether the latest move in its duel with the Department of the Environment is not more petulant than prudent. Chafing still, and rightly, under the DoE's ban on multimedia art displays on the outside lawns, the Serpentine's lively Sue Grayson and her Arts Council confederates are not replacing their banned holiday attraction with an alternative exhibition. Instead they are financing the same show to take place on a reclaimed rubbish tip in Burnley (!) and relaying it via video-tape recording to a screen inside the gallery.

Manen for the job

The Royal Ballet's administrators and resident choreographers, if not necessarily its dancers, have invariably been drawn, if memory serves, from the ranks of native talent. Powerful rumour has it, however, that a significant change is pending. Entranced by the work of the Dutchman. Hans yan Manen .(of the Nederlands Dans Theater), they would seem about to ask him to take over the direction of their New Group.
