Where Cardiff leads

Sir: With reference to the continuing debate on whether or not to keep the Elgin Marbles in Britain, we are happy to inform you that University College Cardiff Students' Union has recently adopted a policy opposing their removal from their rightful resting place in

in the British Museum. A small but dedicated group of Spectator subscribers, together with a moderate Labour historY student, managed to pass a motion condemning Mr Kinnock's cavalier attitude to the Marbles and urging leaders of all political parties that the Marbles were rightfully British. Despite spirited far left opposition the motion was passed by an overwhelming majority. As far as we are aware, this is the first student union in the country to have defended cultural pro- perties in Britain.
