In all probability Thursday and Thursday night saw decisive actions,

but no news has yet come as to the result. All we can say is that Lord Kitchener, who, of course, knew everything that was to be known, in his speech in the House of Lords on the prorogation of Parliament felt justified in speaking very hopefully of the outlook for the Allied Armies. It is probable, indeed, that it will not be possible to estimate the results of Thursday's fighting till to-day or even later. It is one of the curiosities of modern war on the great scale that it takes some time for the combatants as a whole to realize whether they are beaten or have won.
