[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—The moment is come

to recall to the British workman the example of his Italian counterpart when, a few years ago, Italy found herself in grave financial difficulties, and the battle of the lira was sounded, to arrest the flight from her currency.

Prominent among those who came promptly to the aid of the Excehquer were some poor Genoese dockers, who initiated a nation-wide subscription. This " Million Dollar Fund," as it was called, was taken up with great enthusiasm, alike by civil servants, by humble private citizens, and by captains of industry, and was soon over-subscribed.

We have had a right royal lead from the King and the Prince of Wales. If we can have another from -" Labour " the heart of the whole nation will be touched.—I am, Sir, &c.,
