A School Greek Grammar. By W. W. Goodwin, LL.D. (Macmillan.)

—The notices of Dr. Goodwin's previous works, and .especially of his larger Greek grammar, that have been given in the Spectator, render it unnecessary to give any detailed account of this excellent abridge- ment. It is "intended," as the preface says, "for those who wish to begin the study of Greek with a small book, with the expectation of using a larger grammar after the elements are mastered." Plain- ness and directness of statement characterise the whole ; and, like the larger book, it is not disdainful of "simplifying processes,"—e.g., on the subject of verbal stems ; while at the same time recognising them as only "intermediate fictions." It is probably the best be- ginner's book in English.
