Portrait of the Week

THE OPINION POLLS had already settled the matter to their own satisfaction: but still, Britain's general election had to wind on to its ordained climax in the polling stations. On the basis of National Opinion Poll findings, Tues- day's Daily Mail noted that for all the change it had brought about in public opinion, the election campaign might just as well not have taken place. Mr Edward Heath preserved a cheerful front in the depressing circumstances and even inspired the headline of the week : TED LAUGHS OFF THE POLLSTERS; while Mr Jo Grimond surprised no one with his conclusion that 'at this election, the effective vote is going to be a Liberal vote.' Mr Harold Wilson, meanwhile, let it be known that it would be a relief when the tedious interruption of the election was over and he could return fully to his business of running the country's affairs.
