South Africa

Sir: I am sure that many of your better- informed readers will have written to thank you for 'South Africa: A Survey' (18 July), but I feel that I, as a previously ill-informed reader on South Africa, should write to thank Nicholas Davenport and his team for the most valuable short brief that I have read for years on a single country and its problems. I hope sincerely that you will be inspired by a favourable 'reader-reaction' to continue this idea and cover other countries —India, for example, or Japan. I am sure that the majority of your readers will have been as interested, stimulated and impressed as I was by the quality of the contributions and, particularly, by the quality of Mr Davenport's rejoinders.
