Shorter notices

1940 The Fall of France General Andre Beaufre (Cassell 42s). The author was in the headquarters of the French High Command in 1940 and tells the story of the French defeat with much skill and perception. His thesis is that, no matter how well prepared a nation is, morale is as essential as any formal defence.

Florentine. Journal Arnold Bennett with an introduction by Sacheverell Sitwell (Chatto and Windus 25s). Bennett stayed in Florence in April and May 1910 and kept a combined journal and sketchbook. He became engrossed in both the local customs and the habits of the English visitors, and this short book is now published for the first time in its entirety. Strongly recommended.

Fielding Hamilton Macallister (Evans Brothers; hard-cover 16s; paperback 8s 6d). Excellent- short account of Fielding's life and times as well as containing a critique of his works.

The Highland Clans Moncreiffe of that Ilk and David Hicks (Barrie and Rockliff 63s). Brilliantly produced book which illuminates the story of the clans (and the Highlands) from prehistoric times to the present. Should become a minor classic.
