Savings promotion

National Savings showed a deficit of £21 million last month. This is the amount withdrawals exceeded new savings before adding back accrued_ interest. Before too many more simple souls entrust their money to National Savings, week following week, the movement might consider asking their PR and advertising men, if that's what they have, to engage somebody of the calibre of, say, Will Camp, who did so much for British Steel, and ask him to prepare for the Treasury not some ever-so-tricky scheme involving tax relief, but a well argued inter-departmental memorandum requesting the control of the investment ratios of gross funds. This would quickly bring money back to the gilt-• edged market, raising prices and lowering yield to the advantage of the little people who support National Savings.
