SQUIRREL AND ROOK.

Five grey squirrels and four very severe looking Sable- coated rooks are lunching on bread crumbs on the lawn, and there has just been a battle between one of the squirrels and a rook. It was most graceful warfare for the rook danced with his captured crust, and the squirrel performed amazing acrobatic feats, and each got away eventually with its chosen morsel The brown squirrels used to breakfast with me on the dining-room table, but they have gone—a vanquished race.—E.,
