Enough of Gough

From Dr. J. A. Heel

Sir: We welcomed your editorial comments 'Enough of Gough' (December 28, 1974) and also 'Australian states rights' (January 11) which demonstrated an awareness of some of Australia's main dangers today. There are still a majority of loyal Australians who see the monarchy as the greatest deterrent to the formation of a Socialist Republic of Australia Which is undoubtedly the ideal of the present Commonwealth government and their new found friends behind the iron curtain.

Sadly, there are also many, many loyal Australians who, being unaware of the implications, are taken in by Gough's nationalism which they see With pride as part of growing up as an independent nation.

The word 'Commonwealth' has been dropped from all offical titles and replaced by the word 'Australian'. 'God Save the Queen' has been dropped as the national anthem. The Queen's image has been removed from the Postage stamps whilst insidiously, quietlY, without publicity, all ties with Great Britain and the Royal family are being eroded.

Following a national referendum Which overwhelmingly rejected the denigration of state rights by constitutional changes, there has been a steady surreptitious intrusion by economic pressure tactics which the states find difficult to resist. Two men in particular . are aware of the problems and the intrigues against which they must battle to prevent the breakdown of constitutional government in Australia. In desperation and after many rebuffs in Canberra they are coming to London to plead for help from the Queen that they may resist these centralist forces and to pray that she be established in her own right as Queen over their sovereign states, namely Queensland and Western Australia. I would like to make this an open letter to the Queen herself and humbly Pray that she receive them courteously, for they truly represent the sentiments of her loyal subjects in Australia more fairly than the dogmatic statements made by our present federal leader When recently in Britain and which may be proved by history to have been Spoken with a forked tongue.
