Sir: Sir Peter Hall is not alone (`Censorship: then and now', 11 January), but at least he managed to get his series off the ground.

We have been trying for some time to raise broadcaster interest and finance for a project which would result in a wonderful series of animated stories for children's television.

The idea is based on Aesop-like stories collected in southern and East Africa early this century by a (now very elderly) lady who was married to a district officer. After a great deal of effort, we finally managed to persuade an American production compa- ny to take a serious look, only to be told that they 'could not touch a project which was based on the writings of the wife of a white imperialist colonialist'. The fact that the stories are deeply rooted in local African folklore going back centuries, and that the 'writer' did neither more (nor less) than collect them and put them into English, counted for nothing.

Sad for us and sad for the young audi- ence which would love the stories.
