In praise of Ted

Sir: I was sad to read Paul Johnson's per- sonal attack on Ted Heath (And another thing, 25 January). Ted Heath may be cur- mudgeonly, but he is also a loyal, kind and patriotic man, who is most generous to his old friends — especially when they are in trouble. 'Just ring me up,' I have heard him say on more than one occasion, 'and if I can help, I will' — and he means it. He is par- ticularly good with young people, as his many godchildren will testify, and always encouraging towards their endeavours.

I also feel that he has done a great deal for his country, both in war and peace, so that such a vitriolic personal attack is thor- oughly uncalled for.
