We are glad to perceive that the Queen has appointed

Lord Hersehell, the present Lord Chancellor, to be Chancellor of the University of London, in succession to the late Earl of Derby. Lord Herschell is the first Chancellor who had graduated in the University, and who properly, therefore, belongs to its ranks. Lord Herschell is deservedly popular in the University, to the affairs of which he has given a great deal of personal attention ; and his remarkable political moderation and candour will remove any annoyance which may perhaps be felt in the University at the nomination of a Chancellor whose influence in the House of Lords may do something to neutralise that of their able and distinguished representative, Sir John Lubbock, in the House of Commons.
