Clay feet

Park House, Batheaston, Somerset Sir: A sudden storm in a clear sky was accepted by the ancients as a judgement. The crack in the image of sterling, allegedly so bright, has shown the clay feet of the idol; economic community is bought too dearly.

Our independent nation and Parliament draw towards their end. At the last session of the Parliament of Scotland, 1706, Lord Belhaven made this prayer: "Some unforeseen providence will fall out that may cast the balance.. .. None can destroy Scotland save Scotland's self."

It is not too late for us to think better of joining the EEC.
