'Bossy Pamela

Sir: Although I deplore the coldly cutting terms of Mr John Calvin's letter (June 10), I too have in recent months bristled at the quite unnecessary ' bossiness ' of some of Mrs Vandyke Price's articles.

At her best she can write like an angel; she can be wise and witty, and no one can dispute the depth of her expertise. At her recent worst, she exhibits a nagging and patronising arrogance that is repellent, and quite uncharacteristic. A bad-tempered wine-writer is a contradiction in terms, and she has several times been downright bad-tempered. So will you please send her on holiday to a remote French hotel where ' friends ' cannot offend her delicate sensibilities with their clumsiness — and there, in solitude, let her recover her sense of proportion, and humour. But don't let her stay away too long — one would miss her bracing common sense.
