Potty law

From Mr Mick Humphreys

Sir: Lord Bingham (`Top judge', 25 May) is quite right. The Misuse of Drugs Act is a stupid law: cannabis should be legal.

Under Blunkett's plan, the maximum penalty for the supply of cannabis will be reduced from 14 to five years in prison; and for possession, from five years to two years.

However, under section eight of this stupid Act, any person who owns or manages any premises, and knowingly allows anyone else to administer or use cannabis, can go to prison for five years. This means that if you are at home and your 18-yearold child comes in and you let him use cannabis, he can go to prison for two years but you can be jailed for five years.

The Misuse of Drugs Act makes an ass of the law, and the wise Lord Bingham knows it.
