The fate of Shere All is still uncertain. The correspondent

of the New York Herald telegraphs a report from a Russian surgeon who visited the Ameer at Maziri-Shelif that he has gangrene of the thigh, and his death is certain ; but this is not yet confirmed. His death would leave Yakoob- Khan, who has gathered some kind of an army at Cabul, free to act, and fight or negotiate as he pleases. The- force sent to Girishk had, according to a telegram in the Telegraph, dated Ghishk, February 23rd, recrossed. the Helmund, on its way back to Candahar, "under cover of strong reconnaissances "—a curious 'expression, which suggests that it was being pursued. That is improbable, though a rumour was- sent home a few days ago that an Afghan force was advancing to the Helmund from Herat. At present, however, nothing- can be more tranquil than the position of the troops at Jella- labad, Fort Koornm, and Candahar, and we should say no- thing more uncertain. After March 15th, any week may see all Afghanistan in insurrection.
