In reply to Iain Macleod

IMMIGRATION DUNCAN SANDYS, MP

Dear lain,

In your open letter to me in last week's SPECTATOR you urged me to drop my Private Member's Bill on immigration and adopt 'a bi-partisan approach to this difficult and complicated problem.'

The Editor kindly offered to print my reply, and I drafted a detailed answer to each of the points you raised. But in the interval a lot has happened, and your letter has been largely overtaken by events.

The Government have now themselves intro- duced a Bill similar to mine and I am giving them my full support, in the bi-partisan spirit which you recommended.

Since I have meanwhile had the opportunity to state my position fully in Parliament, I do not believe that it would be in the interests of the country or our party for me to pursue further a public argument _with you.

Yours ever, Duncan.
