God's own propaganda

• George Gale (25 October) cannot have both ways. Either (as I agree) The Ques- Why is a poor and ineffective piece of oadcasting, trivialising whatever it touches use of its built-in absurdities of format; you can get high-handed over those who using it for propaganda purposes. Unless, is, you believe there are those hidden subtle figures lurking in Broadcasting ouse and using the Religious Broadcasting artment to undermine Christianity in Lain. I have heard this opinion advanced all seriousness, but this was not George ale's point.

Similarly I cannot accept his attack on the arch at its face value. The Church as has little or no control over what is

u broadcast. The central Religious d%isory Committee is just that, advisory, normally after the event. But this does mean he hasn't got something. If the arch is to blame, it is in not asking for a ange away from the 'Holy Hour' set-up. today's society her message stands a ance of being heard only when she comes of the protected areas and takes her oper place in everyday life. In broad- sting this means mid-week programming e to stand on its own merits; Sunday ogramming taking note of public demand .hich would not necessarily exclude church ices, and certainly not Songs of Praise Stars on Sunday, apparently); and so far discussions go, informed Christian con- utions within a general debate.

Croft Road, Godalming, Surrey It is hard to decide from George es 'Viewpoint' (26 October) whether he s made himself immune from the dreadful inwashing that the Church is subjecting to from birth to the grave, or whether has courageously escaped from its horrors found spiritual asylum in the 'columns the SPECTATOR.

lit on the evidence he has provided so far, clearly has it in for us clerics who have temerity to say that we believe life has eaning and a purpose and that God is the centre of it. How awful it must be for one overhearing such prOpaganda to gain impression that perhaps faith and hope love are not ultimately meaningless r all; but at least now they will be able find a proper corrective in Mr Gale's kly column and allow themselves to be nwashed into thinking that nothing can known about ultimate questions except t there aren't any.
