Umbrella man

Sir: John Cooke Moog to rain over us', 11 October) says 'There is no statue of any kind to poor (Jonas) Hanway.' In any event, a monument to him was erected in Westminster Abbey in 1788, although this may not have taken the form of a statue, but of a mere tablet. However, by the terms of his will, I believe his mumified corpse was placed in the Board Room of the Foundling Hospital, which he re- formed, in order to preside over all future meetings. It may be there still, complete with umbrella — supposing there are still any foundlings.
