In the United States of America, a good deal of

interest is ex- cited as to the probable termination of the contest in Texas, and the consequences of its incorporation with the Union, should the Mexicans be eventually compelled to abandon it. The land speculators, who had seized that portion of the Mexican territory, would gladly see it joined to the United States, as would also the Slave-holding party ; for Texas would make four Slave States, and thus give a decided preponderance to that party in Congress.
